When planning your road-trip with your four-legged friend, its best to map out some possible pet-friendly stops along the way. For example, if you are driving from Auckland to Rotorua we have found the following great pet-friendly places to stop and explore.
Hamilton
Although now you can bypass Hamilton, it always pays to stop and give your dog a chance to spread their legs (thanks Chris!) whilst you enjoy a delicious lunch.
Camarosa is an elegant cafe and bar in Hamilton, NZ serving high-quality dishes with fresh, local produce. Leashed dogs are welcomed at the outdoor tables.
The Keg Room has an exclusive K9 menu that will leave your furry friend spoilt for choice with savoury and sweet options, catering to any picky palate. They not only have doggicino’s on offer but offer tasty treats too such as Chicken Liver Dust, Peanut Butter and Banana Pupcake or Droolicious Doggie Donut.
Hamilton Gardens Café have “Good Noze” doggie treats available to purchase from the café with an alfresco dining area with views across turtle lake. Dogs are not permitted in the Enclosed Gardens or in Hamilton East Park Cemetery however they are allowed elsewhere on-lead. There is an off-lead dog exercise area near Gate 1 carpark.
Once lunch has finished let your dog run it off at some great off-leash areas such as Hamilton Lake, River walks or Till’s Lookout. Resthills Park, based in Glenview has a dedicated dog exercise area.
Matamata
If you want to go the other way through Matamata they have some great dog-friendly areas to explore. Check out the following locations that you can exercise your dog off-leash:
There are also a couple of local cafes that advertise they are dog-friendly (prior to 8am):
O-del-emz is a nice little café off the main street. Open for breakfast. Leashed dogs are welcome at the outside tables.
The Coffee Gallery is a local café that has outside seating and water for dogs. It also has toys for the kids to keep them amused. A small selection of gift-ware items are also available for sale.
